It’s already starting. Have you noticed it? Dry, red, and maybe itchy winter skin. I have definitely noticed it a little bit myself. In the past I have suffered from horribly dry skin as well as had nasty flares with what I know is a form of eczema. I know firsthand how challenging skin issues can be.
Since improving my diet, healing my gut, and switching to high-performing non-toxic skincare products, I no longer suffer from the skin issues I used to experience. And if I have small flares, I know exactly what to do to calm them down.
With any skin-related issues, you first have to look at gut health and internal triggers. If this is something you need support with, please reach out as I am a gut and immune health expert.
For most people, cold weather exacerbates and creates new skin issues. Dry skin becomes even more dry, chapped, and flaky. And issues like eczema get worse.
For people with oily and sensitive skin, the winter (and heat blowing indoors) can make skin red, irritated, and dehydrated. The good news is many winter skin issues can be resolved by making small shifts to your skincare routine and implementing a few simple things.
Just like I recommend eating for the season, it’s also important to sync your skincare to the seasons because it has different needs.
Dehydration is the root cause of many daily skin concerns (even oily skin issues). Our skin is constantly stripped of water through evaporation and is exposed daily to environmental toxins, so it’s important to replenish your skin with nutrients and protect against water loss.
To maintain hydration in the winter:
- Eat nutrient-dense, hydration-boosting foods (fruits and LOTS of vegetables)
- Foods rich in fat-soluble vitamins (egg yolks and grass-fed meats, & salmon)
- Drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day
- Supplement with Vitamin D & Fish oil
- Minimize alcohol consumption
- Use a humidifier especially at night while you sleep, this HELPS SO MUCH
- Implement a skincare routine that includes both nutrients and moisturizers that are specific to your skin type
In general, there are three different types of products that add nutrients to your skin, improve barrier function, and protect against water loss:
Serums are supplemental boosters that can work wonders by delivering a concentrated dose of nourishing ingredients that target your specific skin concerns. It’s sort of like a multivitamin for your skin.
2). Facial Oils
Oils help to replenish the skin with nourishing fatty acids. Essential fatty acids are the building blocks of cell membranes, and help maintain the skin’s natural barrier which is critical in keeping the skin hydrated and radiant.
Moisturizers are the icing on the cake when it comes to preventing water loss and locking in nutrients. This protects your skin, and locks it down. They seal in oils and serums.
When it’s cold and the air is dry, it’s best to up the ante and use a combo of all three. You can shift these into your morning or nighttime routine (or both)! For example, you may just need to rotate in a facial oil into your nightie routine when your skin is extra dry, or you may find using a different serum and more nourishing day moisturizer solves your issues.
It’s important to choose products that are free from endocrine-disrupting chemicals, known carcinogens, formaldehyde, oxybenzone, parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, toluene, and triclosan to decrease the toxic load on your body as well as to not further irritate and strip your skin of hydration. That is why I choose to use Beautycounter products and other non toxic products on my skin.
