Today I want to talk about what you put ON your body and share my recipe for keeping my skin hydrated and looking good through the winter months.
Before I do that it’s important to know that, according to the Environmental Working Group the average woman uses an average of 12 products a day, containing 168 different chemicals. Men use fewer products and still put 85 chemicals on their bodies. 60% of what we put on our bodies absorbs into our skin which in turn ends up in our bloodstream. WOW!
If you’ve read my blog post on cleaner skincare products, you know I’m PASSIONATE about Beautycounter – their mission is to get safer products into the hands of EVERYONE!!! Skincare and beauty products that perform yet are free of harmful toxic chemicals.
Beautycounter has a NEVER LIST that includes chemicals that are endocrine-disrupting, known carcinogens, and may put us at risk for chronic disease. Formaldehyde, oxybenzone, parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, toluene, and triclosan are just a few chemicals from this list. View a complete list via the Beautycounter website.
Now let’s talk about my “recipe” for avoiding dry skin during the cold winter months. Here in Minnesota, we have experienced some bitter cold stretches this winter and it is tough on a person’s skin. I used to suffer from VERY dry skin during the winter months and I hated the flakiness.
My “recipe” includes the following products from Beautycounter: Cleansing Balm, #1 Brightening Oil, Countermatch Cleansing Milk, Countermatch Adaptive Moisturizer Lotion, Countermatch Recovery Sleeping Cream, Countermatch Serum, Countermatch Eye Cream, and Dew Skin Moisturizer. I also use Primally Pure’s Everything Spray as a toner.
If you are looking for more anti-aging check out the Rejuvenate line as that is designed for anti-aging WITHOUT drying out your skin. You would simply replace the Countermatch products with the Rejuvenate products in my sequence below.
Now let me walk you through my AM & PM skincare routine and products for dry winter skin…
Step 1 AM – Cleanser: Countermatch Pure Calm Cleansing Milk. I have found this to be a really wonderful daily gentle cleanser for my skin. If you are wanting more of an anti-aging cleanser the Rejuvenating Cleanser could replace the Countermatch Cleansing Milk OR you can use the Cleansing Balm both AM & PM.
Step 1 PM – Cleanser: Cleansing Balm. Seriously this is one of my FAVORITE Beautycounter products! I have found this to be VERY helpful with my dry skin during the winter months. It feels amazing on my skin.
I apply a dime-sized amount to my hands, rub it all over my face (it’s wonderful for taking off makeup), and wipe away with a warm washcloth. It comes with a white muslin cloth that helps as a mechanical (vs. chemical) exfoliator. A little goes a long way so this product lasts a LONG time.
Note: When it’s really cold and my skin feels REALLY dry, I will also re-apply this as an overnight mask instead of the Countermatch Night Cream.
Step 2 AM & PM – Toner: Everything Spray from Primally Pure. I never used to use toner until I learned that it helps to reset your skin’s pH. Use the code THECLUB10 for a 10% discount on any Primally Pure products. I also LOVE their deodorant.
Step 3 AM & PM – Countermatch Serum.
Step 4 AM – Moisturizer: Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion. What I love most about this moisturizer is that it is lightweight but very hydrating which is very important if you are putting makeup on top of it.
Step 4 PM – Moisturizer: Countermatch Recover Sleeping Cream. Also lightweight, feels so good going on, and very hydrating.
Step 5 AM (optional) – SPF: Dew Skin Moisturizer. This is a tinted moisturizer with SPF 20 that has a dew like finish. I apply it with my fingers and it goes on BEFORE makeup. Most days I wear this with a little Matte Bronzer and a swipe of Volumizing Mascara for a minimal look.
Step 5 PM – #1 Brightening Oil. I love the way this goes on, the way my skin feels after, and how it leaves my skin brighter during dull winter months!
Step 6 PM (optional) – Eye Cream. I really like the Countermatch Eye Cream. See a pattern here…the Countermatch line is my go-to because it offers moisture, hydration, and a little bit of age prevention. If you are really looking for Anti-aging then check out the Rejuvenate line, I add that into my routine as well!
Bonus: 1-2 x Weekly Treatment: Charcoal Mask. The salicylic acid present here can really help soothe irritated skin. Before I apply the mask, I cleanse with the Charcoal Bar, and I go through steps 2-5 after a charcoal mask. I have more acne-prone skin and always have so I do this mask a couple of times per week.
I know this looks like a lot of steps, but it really doesn’t take that long. I’ve come to really cherish my morning and night skincare routines as acts of self-care. Even if I am REALLY tired, I still want to go through my nighttime routine because I know that my skin will feel amazing afterward!

Here are THREE More Ways to Beat Dry Skin this Winter…
- Use a humidifier when you sleep. Seriously this helps SO MUCH!!!
- Drink TONS of water. Half your body weight in ounces of water per day. I actually drink more than that. On most days I am drinking 120 ounces of water and that includes some herbal teas.
- Eat lots of vegetables and fruit that are water and nutrient-dense. Aim for 7-9 servings of vegetables and fruit each day with a 3:1 ratio of vegetables to fruit. For every 3 servings of vegetables eat 1 serving of fruit.
