Have you ever purchased or signed up for something only to cancel it hours or days later?
In the business world, we call this Buyer’s Remorse.
It’s defined as “a feeling of regret experienced after making a purchase, typically one regarded as unnecessary or extravagant.”
This might happen if you treat yourself to an expensive outfit that you may have purchased on impulse.
But, buyer’s remorse is also a feeling of FEAR triggered by your own limiting beliefs that often shows up as logic or reason.
Deep down you believe that you’re just always going to be (the opposite of the outcome you want and why you purchased the thing) and nothing ever works for you… so you come up with reasons why “now isn’t a good time” or “this program isn’t a good fit.”
For example, subconsciously, you believe you’re always going to be fat and no weight loss program has ever worked for you long term so you’re going to wait until the kids are out of the house to get started when you have more time and you can fully devote yourself to the program.”
Or, really deep down you believe that you’re not good enough and don’t deserve (the outcome of the thing you purchased) so rationalize (ration lies) for why you should return the thing, cancel the service, or quit the program.
For example, subconsciously, you believe you’re not worthy of being fit and attractive so you quickly find fault in the program and use that, no matter how minor, insignificant, or imagined it is, as your reason to quit…and place the blame elsewhere, to boot.
Sadly, as a 25-year fitness professional, I’ve seen this countless times.
I was talking to some of my colleagues last week and they concurred. And, they wanted to know what we could do about it? How could we help these people?
Well, it starts with education…so here I go…
